The Art of Pausing: Micro Moments We Forget We Need

The Art of Pausing: Micro Moments We Forget We Need

There’s a quiet kind of exhaustion that doesn’t always show up as burnout…

it shows up as rushing, as holding your breath without realizing, as moving from one moment to the next without ever really arriving.

I’ve noticed it in myself too.

The way we tell ourselves we’ll slow down later.
After this session. After this task. After this day.

But later keeps moving.

And somewhere in between everything we’re carrying…
we forget that we’re allowed to pause inside the day, not just at the end of it.

Not long breaks. Not big resets.
Just small, intentional moments that gently bring us back to ourselves.

A Few Soft, Unexpected Ways to Pause

Not the usual “take a deep breath” kind of pauses…
but the ones that feel a little different. A little more felt.

The “Name 3 Things You’re Avoiding Feeling” Pause
Instead of calming down—get honest. Quietly name what’s sitting underneath the surface.

The “Touch Something Cold” Reset
Hold something cold (a glass, a counter, even running water) and just notice the sensation. Let it interrupt your internal noise.

The “Shift Your Posture Like You Mean It” Moment
Not just sitting up straight but, intentionally changing how you’re holding yourself. Let your body lead your mind for once.

The “Where Did I Leave Myself?” Check-In
Ask yourself: Where did I disconnect from myself today? No fixing... just noticing.

The “One Honest Sentence” Pause
Write or think one sentence that is completely true for you in that moment. No filtering.

The “Change the Room Energy” Reset
Move one thing. Open a window. Turn on a light. Small shifts can signal safety to your nervous system.

The “Look at Your Hands” Grounding Moment
Sounds simple but pause and really look at your hands. It brings you back into your body in a quiet, unexpected way.

Micro-Breaks That Actually Feel Like Relief

These aren’t productivity hacks.
They’re small permissions.

• Step outside without your phone, even for 60 seconds
• Sit in silence instead of filling the gap
• Let yourself not respond right away
• Stretch in a way that feels almost indulgent
• Close your eyes and do nothing (yes, nothing)
• Take a sip of something warm and actually feel it
• Pause between tasks instead of rushing into the next
• Let your shoulders drop... on purpose
• Stop mid-thought and ask: Do I need to keep going right now?

A Gentle Reminder

You don’t need to earn your pauses.
You don’t need to wait until you’re overwhelmed enough to deserve one.

You’re allowed to step out of the noise…
for a moment…
and come back softer.

And sometimes, those small pauses?
They’re the exact thing that keeps everything else from feeling so heavy.

If you’re finding yourself needing more moments like this…
a little more space, a little more guidance, a place to land…

I’ve created therapeutic worksheets and resources designed to meet you in those exact in-between moments.

Not to overwhelm you but to gently support you. Explore them here whenever you’re ready.
